Answer :Stephen Leacock in this story “Heroes and heroines” makes fun of the popular fiction Also describe the role of Ned in such books.
written for children. This type of fiction has adventure, suspense and melodrama. Children all over the world are fond of adventure. Stories of strange happening appeal to their imagination. Danger, suspense and excitement attract them. The writers of children’s literature therefore use these elements in their books. But very often the adventures become absurd and comic stories. The hero of such books is a young man who never grows old even after taking part in hundreds of great adventures. His face has no scar although he has fought many battles almost single-handed. Ned is a typical hero. He is a wonderful youth; strong, brave and resourceful. He takes part in all the great battles of western history without being hurt. Tribes of cannibals attack him but cannot wound him. Sometimes he is taken prisoner and is about to be thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. But at the last moment he turns the tables on his enemies and escapes. He is shipwrecked many times but always manages to swim to the shore and reach the battlefield where he is needed at the proper time. Ned, or whatever his name in a particular book, is a crusader. He has taken upon himself the great responsibility of shaping the history of the world. He was with the Barons who had rebelled against the dictatorship of king John of England is the 13th century. It was he who forced the king to sign Magna Carta guaranteeing the rights of people. He was back in America in 1776 to fight against the British. He was with General Washington when he crossed the River Delaware and defeated the British at Princeton and Trenton. Our young hero then had to rush to France to fight against Napoleon. A century later in 1863 he was back in America to help General Mead in the battle of Getysburg. In fact, he was the man who defeated the Confederates and ended the American Civil War. You may well ask “How is it possible for a human being to be the central figure in all the great events of world in all ages?” Well, the simple answer is that Ned is not an ordinary human bring. He is the hero, and heroes, as we know, can accomplish the impossible. What is after all the use of a hero if he cannot do the work of a army single-handedly? In these stories of Ned’s adventures, there is seldom a place for a heroine. If all a heroine is introduced, it is in the last page or paragraph perhaps the author remembers at the last moment that there is after all no harm in letting Ned spend a few minutes in the company of a girl who is often the playmate of his childhood, before rushing to another vbattlefield.
