“Gender socialization”
Background Information
In most of the higher species, males and females behave differently in some respect. With cultural explanation, these gender roles differ and deeply imbedded in social structure of society. This suggests that male and female behavior is socially constructed and in some way cultures through social institutions endorse these practices. In traditional societies like Pakistan these differences are more evident and socializing agents reinforce the existing patterns of thought and behavior. Children being the important members of society also internalize these expected roles. With reference to the given scenario attempt the following assignment.
Task you have to Perform:
You are required to ask two children (one boy and one girl 10-12 years old) about their interests and professions they want to adopt in future. And make a list of the interests specified by both separately.
Questions:
1. Analyze the interest of both being male and female members of the society and evaluate how the specified interests and professions mentioned by these children reinforce traditional gender role socialization of our society? 5
2. Is it strengthening the existing norms or changing our society? 5
3. What main factors or agents do you think contribute in strengthening and changing these roles? 5
Guidelines to Conduct the Assignment
Mention the age of children
Discuss every interest and profession separately giving proper reasoning for defining it traditional or changing as per social norms
There should be at least 5 interests and professions (for each child) in your assignment.
