Karachi, Aug 24: A consortium of universities formed by the European Union (EU) Commission are offering scholarships for the students and faculty of some Asian seats of higher learning, including the University of Karachi (KU). KU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi stated this, on Tuesday. She said that over 100 scholarships would be offered to the students and faculty of the Asian universities, including KU. Other universities are of India, China, Bangladesh and Nepal. Known as Erasmus Mundus, the scholarships are fully funded for the European universities for the period 2011-2014.
Dr Shahana, who is coordinator in Pakistan for this scholarship programme, said that an introductory seminar would be organised at the KU Campus on Aug 25 (tomorrow) at 10:00am for all those who are interested in securing such scholarships for year 2012. During the seminar the attendees would be briefed about details of the scholarships finalised at the recently held meeting in Beijing, which was attended by Dr Shahana. She said that there are three target groups for these scholarships. First, the students and staff registered at KU. Second, students registered in higher educational institutions and thirdly, the students who are in vulnerable and deprived areas including floods and disaster-hit. Dr Shahana said that seven KU students were selected for these scholarships last year and they are about to proceed to respective universities.
