Dear students a Graded Discussion Board for “Artificial Intelligence (CS607)” will be opened from July 29, 2010 to July 30, 2010. You have to post your comments on the topic given below. This GDB has weight-age of 5% of your total subject marks. Your comments will be graded based on the logic you have used to support your answer.

Topic for Graded Discussion Board is:
“Computers have been used in education for quite time now. Computer-based training (CBT) and computer aided instruction (CAI) were the first such systems deployed as an attempt to teach using computers. Problem with these systems was that the instruction was not individualized to the learner's needs i.e. the learner's abilities were not taken into account. Though these techniques may be somewhat effective in helping learners, they do not provide the same kind of individualized attention that a student would receive from a human tutor. For a computer based educational system to provide such attention, it must reason about the domain and the learner. For these reasons, researchers have tried to develop Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS), which have the flexibility in presentation of material and ability to respond to individual student needs. These systems achieve their intelligence by representing educational decisions about how to teach as well as information about the learner. This allows for greater versatility by altering the system's interactions with the student.
- Do you think ITS will be able replace human tutor in future, especially in distance learning environment?
- Will ITS will be a good replacement of human tutor in situations where multiple teaching strategies are required for explanation?”
