    Q. 1 How did the young seagull learn to fly?
Answer: Flaying is natural to young birds. They do not need to learn it. But the young see gull in the story “His first fling” had to work hard to make his first flight. The author of this story has a deep knowledge of the behavior of birds, which makes this story interesting. The young seagull stood alone on the ledge where he was hatched. His two brothers and sister had flown away the day before? He had been afraid to may with them. He had tried again and again but had failed to fly. He had un to the edge of the ledge but failed to flap his wings. He would becomes afraid at the last moment and run back to the little hold in the ledge. His father and mother had tried to encourage him but to no avail. Disappointed they had left him to his fate. Now he stood alone the ledge. He was sad. His family had not come to him for the last twenty four hours. The day before he had seen his parents flying about with his brothers and sister perfecting them in the art of flying. He had watched his brother catch his first fish and eat it. The sun shone bright and hot on his ledge. He was hungry and weak because he had eaten anything since he previous night. He wanted to reach his family without flying. Down below there was the vast sea. Above him the cliff rose very high. He walked to the edge of the ledge. He stood on one leg. He closed his eyes as if asleep. He hoped to draw the attention of his family towards him. But they paid no attention. He saw his mother tearing at a piece of fish. The sight of food maddened him. He uttered a low cackle. His mother cackled too, and looked at him. She took a piece of fish and flew towards him. But when she reached near him, she halted in the air. He waited wonder and surprise why she had not com nearer. But then maddened by hunger, he jumped at the fish. His mother flew upwards. He fell into space. He was terrified. But the next moment his wings spread outwards. He felt dizzy. He was no longer afraid. He was now flying near the sea. He saw his parents, his or others and sister sitting on the green sea. They were cackling. He fell down and floated on the surface of the sea. His brothers and sister circled round him. They gave him piece of fish.
    Q. 2 Write in your own words the writer’s careful observations of the ways of seagulls.
Answer: “His first flight” is an interesting story about seagulls. He knows how seagulls look, how they feel and how they express their feelings. Its keen observation enables him to present the seagulls as real birds of flesh and bones. The author’s description of the young seagull and his lucid. His body was grey as the colour of the cliff. His legs were long and grey. He walked briskly and gracefully. The author describes him and his movements so thoroughly that the reader sees the seagull moving to and for on the ledge clearly. “His first flight” is faith full description of the bird’s behavior. it shows that the author has observed the seagulls for a long time. He knows when they are worried or afraid or angry. He understands their moods and their feelings. He can read the meanings of the sound they utter. The young seagull utters a low cackle. It means that he is trying to catch his mother’s attention. When he succeeds in doing so, his cackle becomes a cry (“Ga , ga , ga”) of begging. His mother’s shrick gawl-ool-ah, is a sharp rebuke. The young seagull’s cackle becomes a scream of joy when he sees his mother coming towards him. The young seagull’s surprise and shock at seeing his mother halt just opposite him is beautifully described. For a moment he stood there montionless and then maddened by hunger he jumped at the fish in his mother’s beak. He fell outwards and downwards. He was terrified. For a moment his heart stood still. Than his wings spread and he was making his first flight.
