Answer: “The jewel of a girl” by Raja Tridiv Roy is an interesting short story about a young lady belonging to the upper class of society. One day she entered a newly opened jeweller’s shop. She had visited the shop once or twice before and had bought expensive ornaments. A few weeks ago she had placed a telephonic order for a pair of identical diamond ornaments. In fact, she had see one set in the showcase and wished to have another set of the same design made for her. She had come to get the two sets. The Manager told her very respectfully that she would have to wait a little for the second set. But she would not wait. So she took one set and the cash memo and paid cash as usual. She told Manager that she would come back at five to get the second set. At 5. OO. P. M the lady came back. The Manager handed over the second set and the cash memo. She thanked the Manager and began to walk towards the gate. The Manager very politely reminded her that she had forgotten to pay. She exclaimed in amazement “ I do not know what you are talking about” and continued walking. The Manager shouted at the doorman to stop her. The lady was in rage at this insult. She asked if he was accusing her of theft. The Manager was once more apologetic. “No, madam, perhaps this is a lapse of memory on your part.” But she refused to admit any lapse of memory. So the Manager rang for the police. A case was registered. In the court it was proved that the lady had purchased only one set of ornaments, the price of which she had paid in cash. The number of notes which the lady had paid tallied with those found in the Manager’s safe. The lady’s bank confirmed that the notes had actually been drawn by her, one day before the incident. It was also proved that whenever she withdrew a large amount, the numbers of notes given to her were carefully checked and noted by the bank. She was acquitted of the charge. The management had to pay a heavy sum to her as damages, for the lady belonged to a respectable family. The Manager lost his job as well as his security deposit with the firm. He is still a bachelor, and believes that the lady had really an attack of forgetfulness. It is very difficult to say whether the lady had an attack of forgetfulness or she had cleverly planned to rob the jewelers. She belonged to the respectable section of the society and enjoyed a good reputation. Why should she cheat a poor manager? She has all the money she needs. Human mind is very complex and sometimes it may play strange tricks. Amnesia or forgetfulness is reality. A number of people suffer from loss of memory. The loss may be permanents or temporary. It is likely that the lady had forgotten that she had purchased two sets but paid only for one. On the other hand, she may be a clever crook. All beautiful and rich woman are not models of virtue. Physical beauty is only skin deep. There is a third possibility. The young graceful lady may not be a victim of amnesia and she may not be a clever crook. She could be an adventurer trying to do something clever and horrible just for the sake of enjoying a strange experience.
