    Q. 16 Write a note on Abraham Lincoln’s life and character.
    Answer: Abraham Lincoln was born in a little log cabin in the state of Kentucky on February 12, 1809. His father was a man of restless nature who would not settle down in one place. His farm in Kentucky proved a failure. He moved his family to the State of Indiana to start all over again. The first thing they did on reaching the piece of land he had acquired for farming was to build a cabin. Then they cleared some more land and planted vegetables and corn. Later, they built a much better house with doors and windows and enclosed with a wooden fence. Abraham helped his father and mother in every was he could. Abraham was eight years old when his father began teaching him the use of a gun. Soon he had his first adventure with the gun, the shooting of a big turkey. It was, of course, the turkey’s own fault for it walked right in front of the bullet. Abe’s –sister was only eleven years old and he had to help her in managing the household. In those days his father brought him a number of books including pilgrim, s progress, Aesop, s fables and Robinson Cruose Reading these books was like entering a new world. His father married again. The step-mother made house comfortable. She looked after Abe and sent him to school. He proved an intelligent student. When he grew up, earned his living in various ways: splitting rails for fences, working as a storekeeper, a, surveyer and a boatman. During this period he visited New Orleans and saw black salves were ill-treated by their masters. He could not accept he idea of human beings owning human beings as if they were beasts of burden. Abe was popular with the people of his locality and was elected a member of the Assembly of the State of 1lliniis. He read law and because a barrister at the age of twenty-eight. He had by now become a great orator. He used his oratory to condemn slavery. In 1861, Lincoln was elected the president of the United states of America. The southern which had most of the negro salves did not accept him. They elected their own president. The country was divided into two parts. A civil war fought.-for four year. Lincoln and the Union won and America because united once again. Slavery and all the negro salves were set free. Lincoln had become one of the greatest benefactors of human race. A few days, in April 1865, a man shot him dead in a theater. Abraham Lincoln was a true patriot, a man of great courage-who never compromised on principles. He was one of America, s greatest orators. His speech at Gettysburg, now known as Address”, is considered one of the most beautiful and effective speeches in English language.
