What is grapevine communication? Why does it develop?
Describe its advantages and disadvantages?
ANSWER:
Grapevine Communication:
“Grapevine communication is the informal transmission of information, gossip or rumor from person to person.
The grapevine is the informal information network within every organization.”
Reasons Which Develop Grapevine Communication:
The grapevine is the informal passing of information through the organization.
The grapevine exists in organizations for many reasons:
a)- The grapevine arises from social interactions.
b)- It is the expression of their natural motivation to communicate.
c) -It is the exercise of their freedom of speech and is a natural, normal activity.
d)- The grapevine starts early in the morning in the car pools.
e)-Once everyone has arrived at work, grapevine activity takes place nearly all day long down hallways, around corners, in meetings, and especially by the coffee machine.
f)- The peak time of the days are breaks and lunch hour during which management has little or no control over the topics of conversation.
Advantages:
1. The grapevine is flexible and can spread information faster than the formal communication channels.
2. It is also capable of penetrating even the tightest security because it cuts across organizational lines and deals directly with people.
3. Dealing effectively with the grapevine is a challenge that will always be a part of a manager's job. Those who are able to understand the power of the grapevine will be better prepared to utilize it to provide stability and credibility in the work environment that is needed in order to achieve organizational goals.

Disadvantages:
1. The grapevine is less accurate than it is because its errors tend to be more dramatic and consequently are more impressed on one's memory than its day-to-day routine accuracy.
2. The grapevine is not trustable always as it does not follow the official path of communication and is spread more by gossips and unconfirmed report.
3. Messages from the grapevine are often lacking in all the details so that the message is subject to misinterpretation.

Question#2
Discuss the main idea of rhetorical theory of communication. Why is it more important than two other theories of communication?
ANSWER:
Rhetoric theory:
“Rhetoric theory offers a circular model of communication and focuses on the response of the message.”
Rhetorical theorists provide an important addition to a communication model for business communicators.
The model of rhetoric theory is circular, not linear.
In this theory the element of feedback is involved in it and by using feedback we can condition our message according to that. We can understand its importance from the fact that we can get desired result of our message by using the feedback in a proper way.

It is important than two other theories due to:

Rhetorical theory is the best of these as it incorporates the aspects of accuracy and situation from electronic theory and social environment theory respectively.
Rhetorical theory includes the aspect of feedback that is why it becomes a circular process while in other theories which are linear only information is sent to the audience and element of feedback is missing.
We can understand its importance from the fact that we can get desired result of our message from our customers by using the feedback in a proper way and also can make better relation with our customers.
So, Rhetorical Theory is more important than others because in this era customers are most important for the business organizations.
