The postman is one of those government servants who wear ill-fitting. Almost shabby, uniforms but do excellent work. He dose not look smart or important, but he is useful and hard working. Most of us meet him daily. He is so familiar that we take him for granted. We do not give him a second look when he comes. It is only when he does not come that we miss him and realize his importance. He is humble and modest but indispensable for all of us. A postman, s life is hard and busy. He has a duty to perform quickly and efficiently. He cannot put off to another day what he has to do today. Weather is not supposed to interfere with his work. Whatever the weather-scorching heat or freezing cold- he has to deliver mail once, twice or thrice daily, six days of the week. Even if he is feeling unwell, he cannot slow down his pace on his rounds. A postman has to be honest. He has to deliver letters, parcels and money-order to the right persons. Many of the letters are important and confidential. They contain information we would not like to go into other hands. So the postman has to be extremely careful. He must give my letters to me and your letters to you. He cannot take chances and give your letters your neighbours and hope they will reach you. He dose not open your letters and pry into your secrets. The postman is a low-paid government servant. It is difficult for him to live a comfortable life within his income . he is not in a position where he can earn money through illegal means. So he lives from hand to mouth. Sometimes, when he brings your money-order, he expects a little tip. If you give him a coin or two. He will be thankful; if you do not, he will not complain. The department says, do not tip the postman. Do as you please but give him a smile and a kind word when he brings your mail next time. Some poor men like a kind word more than they like a one- rupees note.
