Ziauddin University is a HEC recognized, degree awarding private University and a part of the Ziauddin Group. It was founded in the memory of Dr. Sir Ziauddin a renowned academician, philosopher, mathematician and political figure. His vision was to spread quality education amongst the Muslims of the subcontinent.

The Ziauddin Group started with a small maternity home in Nazimabad. It was founded by Dr. Sir Ziauddin's daughter, Dr. Eijaz Fatima and son-in-law Dr. TajamulHussain. Over the last couple of years, the maternity home hasnow expanded to the Ziauddin Group which includes 3 tertiary care hospitals across Karachi, several community based projects, a health focused television channel, a live radio channel, and a University.

The first step towards the development of an academic arm of the Ziauddin Group was taken in 1986 when the School of Nursing was established and recognized by Pakistan Nursing Council. Since then, this school has been upgraded to the level of a College.

In August 1994, through an ordinance passed by the Government of Sindh, permission was granted for the establishment of the Dr. Ziauddin Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, which could grant its own postgraduate degrees and diplomas.

In October 1995, the Sindh Assembly went on to pass an Act, (No. VI of 1995), for the establishment of Ziauddin Medical University. At that time, the University also established an association with community leaders of Sikanderabad, to set up a health Centre. The initiative resulted into a mutual partnership with the Karachi Municipal catchments population, where the University provided services, health education and support.

In December 2005 Ziauddin Medical University was given the Charter as Ziauddin University vide 'The Ziauddin University' (Amendment ACT 2003) dated 13th December, 2005. Thus, allowing Ziauddin University, to further expand its scope over the coming years. It initially started growing in the field of medical related subjects with the addition of faculties and programs in Medicine, Pharmacy, Bio-Medical Engineering, Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, Dentistry, Language and Hearing Sciences. Taking a step further, Ziauddin University has now started to expand into non-medical areas with the creation of its Institute of Communication and Media Studies which inducted its first batch of students in January 2013.

In the near future, Ziauddin University plans to introduce a Faculty of Social Sciences, Arts, Law, Business Administration and Fine Arts. This plan will allow the University to become a full-fledged institution that educates the youth of Pakistan and promotes the vision of Dr. Sir Ziauddin Ahmed.
