Power is the capacity of a person, team, or organization to influence others. There are a few important features of this definition. First, power is not the act of changing someone’s attitudes or behavior; it is only the potential to do so. People frequently have power they do not use; they might not even know they have power. Second, power is based on the target’s perception that the power holder controls (i.e., possesses, has access to, or regulates) a *valuable resource that can help him or her achieve goals. People might generate power by convincing others that they control something of value, whether or not they actually control that resource. This perception is also formed from the power holder’s behavior, such as those who are not swayed by authority or norms. For instance, one recent study found that people are perceived as more powerful just by their behavior such as putting their feet on a table, *taking coffee from someone else’s container, and being less vigilant of *bookkeeping rules. Notice, too, that power is not a personal feeling of power. You might feel powerful or think you have power over others, but it is not power unless others believe you have that capacity.

    POLITICAL BEHAVIOR IN ORGANIZATIONS

Organizational politics is the use of power and influence in organizations. Although many managers feel that politics distracts members from focusing on goal achievement, most also feel that it is common in their organizations and necessary for success as an executive. Political behavior consists of actions not officially sanctioned by an organization that are taken to influence others in order to meet one’s personal goals.

    Power and Politics

Politics is a reality of today’s organizations. Whenever people get together at workplace or in teams, they exert power to gain advantage – in order to earn rewards and advance in their careers. People use their power bases to influence the goals, processes and criterion used in decision making in their favour, too. For this, they form coalitions, bypass the formal chain of command, spread rumors and even leak confidential information.

The outcomes achieved by adopting political tactics may be positive and favorable for those who engage in “politicking”; but research has indicated that the perception of organizational politics has negative impact on job satisfaction and tends to increase anxiety and stress for those who are unwilling to engage in political games.

    Question:

Do you think that politics must exist in organizations? Why or why not, explain with proper arguments.

    Important Instructions:

    1. Your discussion must be based on logical facts.

    2. Your answer must be justified with proper arguments rather than writing theoretical definitions.

    3. Your answer should not exceed 200 words.

    4. Do not copy or exchange your answer with other students.

    5. Obnoxious or ignoble answer should be strictly avoided.

    6. Questions / queries related to the content of the GDB, which may be posted by the students on MDB or via e-mail, will not be replied till the due date of GDB is over.
