MKT630 International Marketing GDB No.1 Discussions and Due Date Dec 02, 2014

Topic: International cultural Environments
NOTE: There is no grace period in case of GDB

McDonald's is the leading global foodservice retailer with more than 35,000 local restaurants serving nearly 70 million people in more than 100 countries each day. McDonald’s has had a long history of lawsuits being filed against it. It had been frequently accused of resorting to unfair and unethical business practices.

In May 2001, a lawsuit was filed against the world's largest fast-food chain McDonald's. The lawsuit alleged that the company had, for over a decade, enticed vegetarian customers into eating “French fries” that contained beef extracts. The “cow” is considered a sacred animal by Hindus and hence beef is not readily available in most restaurants in India. Activists of Hindu fundamentalist groups staged a demonstration in front of the McDonald's head office in Delhi protesting the alleged use of beef flavoring by demanding the closure of all McDonald's outlets in the country.

The courtroom battle entered the 11th month when McDonald's announced that it would issue an apology and pay $ 10 million to vegetarians and religious groups in a proposed settlement of all the lawsuits in March 2002.

Point of Discussion:

McDonald’s needs to adopt different cultures, entering global markets. What cultural and social problems might McDonald’s face when it opens outlets in an Islamic country? Provide at least five productive arguments. (5Marks)
